Mary-Louise Timmermans earned a BS in physics at the University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) and a PhD in fluid mechanics from Cambridge University. She did postdoctoral research at the University of Victoria and the Institute of Ocean Sciences, and at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and was an Assistant Scientist in the Department of Physical Oceanography at WHOI. She joined the faculty in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University in 2009.
