YALE MICROPROBE Training Course (G&G 758)
(JEOL JXA-8530F Electron Microprobe)

Alternative training, in lieu of the course format, also can be arranged.

NEXT/CURRENT OFFERING(S):

1. Spring 2013, likely in "normal" half-semester format (6 sessions/6 weeks). Earliest likely starting date week of 01/21/13. Maximum manageable enrollment ~6, though if the considered revision to eliminate individual lab sessions is adopted, this manageable enrollment may roughly double.

This course, which historically has included both lecture and laboratory sessions, is comprised of six segments (in "normal" format = weeks). Each segment has included:  1) a 2-2.5 hour lecture session and 2) a 1.5-2 hour, hands-on laboratory session (a separate session for each trainee). At the completion of the course, proficiency to operate the microprobe independently may be demonstrated by completing an authorization session. For those receiving course credit, this authorization session constitutes the final exam.   The duration in "normal" schedule format is six (ideally consecutive) weeks. Following installation of the new FEG probe, this format may be trimmed down to shift the hands-on sessions to later times of detailed training associated with research-data acquisition.

If you are interested in taking the course for credit (0.5 hr), you may sign up with Peter Schrader (Dept. registrar, KGL 203). Dept. undergraduates should seek approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Most Recent "Formal" Offering: Autumn 2007 (final offering using the JXA-8600).
Other "notable offerings:
Spring 2000 - Largest class yet (7).
Spring 2003 - First (and hopefully last) term with two separate sessions during a single semester.

History of the most recent incarnation: The electron microprobe course (G&G 758) was offered formally (0.5 hr credit) for the first time in current form during Autumn 1997; offerings in the "normal" (1/2- semester = 6-week) format (Spring, Autumn) may be taken for credit (G&G 758).

As an alternative to the course, individual training sessions can be arranged.  At the completion of training, as at the end of the course, proficiency to operate the microprobe "solo" may be demonstrated by completing an authorization session. A simplified "SEM mode" training procedure also can be undertaken for those whose use does not emphasize quantitative (WDS) analysis and who do not anticipate a need to operate the microprobe "solo".
