The weather data on this page comes from a weather station mounted on the top of Kline Geology Laboratory. The quality of data from this site is satisfactory for most purposes, but quantitative users of the data should be aware of the following aspects.

1) The instruments are not frequently calibrated. Some random errors or drift may occur.
2) The instrument is situation about two meters above roof level and 20 meters above ground level.
3) There is some interference of the winds from KGL itself and from surrounding buildings; Peabody Museum, ESF, Gibbs Lab. and Kline Biology tower.
4) The site is about mile north of New Haven Harbor and four miles from Long Island Sound. Because of this location, it may experience stronger coastal influences than sites in the interior of the state. On the other hand, the KGL station does not represent conditions over the Sound.
5) The site has a mixed urban, suburban land use. It may experience slightly higher temperatures than rural sites.
6) The instrument is co-located with a weather station from Channel 8. Data quality can be checked by comparing the two instruments. A less quantitative comparison could be made with the NOAA data from Tweed-New Haven Airport.
7) No liability is assumed for errors in this data or for loss of data.

Other notes:

1) Temperatures and dewpoints are given in degrees Celsius.
2) Wind direction is measured from true north, using the standard meteorological convention. Note the ambiguity between 0 and 360 degrees.
3) Data is updated every five minutes. The duration of the plot is 24 hours.
4) Pressure is given in millibars.
5) Rainfall is given in accumulated millimeters. It is reset to zero at midnight.
6) Time is given in the current local time system for New Haven: EST or EDT (summer). The page must be reloaded to follow changes in weather.
7) Relative Humidity is given in percent
8) The heat index is a measure of discomfort, computed from temperature and humidity using an accepted formula.
