Sean Willett organizing a very successful mini-workshop on subduction and mantle flow in the
Mediterranean region. The meeting was supported by the NSF RETREAT project and by the Canadian
Institute of Advanced Research (CIAR). We had a total of 16 participants. The workshop was held
at the Osservatorio Geologico di Coldigioco for two days. Coldigioco is located high in the Apennines in central Italy, just west of Ancona.
A combination of the elevation and some unseasonably cold weather made it a very cold venue.
Despite the cold, we had great talks from groups from Roma Tre, Dalhousie University, University of Victoria, IPG Paris,
U Washington, U Southern California, and MIT. The challenge is to integrate seismology and lattice preferred
orientation to understand mantle flow around the slab subducting beneath the Apennines. A number of groups
are work on this general problem. Our objective is that some of the RETREAT participants, namely Heather Sherrington,
David Okaya, Ed Kaminski, Jeff Park, Vadim Levin, and Sean Willett, will be able to make important contributions to
this problem within the next one or two years. A list of talks and powerpoint presentations (where available)
are given below.
