Kline Geology Laboratory Room 327, P.O. Box 208109, New Haven, CT 06520-8109 203-432-3181

     Scintag Horizontal Theta/2-Theta Goniometer

We invite your interest in our facility described in our main XRD page. For more information, please contact Jim Eckert (KGL 327, 203-432-3181).

ACADEMIC USE:  $10/hour
COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL USE:  $30/hour
TECHNICAL/OPERATOR ASSISTANCE:  $20/hour (excludes basic instruction, see NOTE)

The minimum usage charge will be one hour.

NOTE:  For those who are not collecting and interpreting their own data, technical assistance will be assessed both for time of instrument activity and for time that extends beyond instrument usage; this technical assistance includes preparing samples and interpreting data.  This supplementary technical assistance does NOT include training, routine analytical discussions or answering questions about operation or status.  This additional technical assistance charge does pertain to "contracted" work for those who are not collecting and interpreting their own data.  This structure permits accounting for assistance with preparatory and interpretive efforts during periods when additional data are not being gathered on the instrument.

Access

Current hourly rates are listed above.  If training is required while performing initial analyses for your research, we will bring you up to speed on the machine and oversee the initial analyses of your specimens during this instruction; throughout the training period, time will be charged only at the standard rate (excluding "technical assistance").  This indoctrination will include oversight of all initial specimen analyses without an additional charge for "technical assistance".  All users should expect to provide compensation to the laboratory for all research time on the machine.  The only exception to the foregoing is that small laboratory projects for Geology and Geophysics courses, which utilize the XRD, are encouraged. Properly trained students may use the equipment, on such projects, for up to 5 hours without charge.
A sign-up calendar is located in KGL 321 on the cabinet in front of the XRD.  Also check with Jim Eckert (see below) to verify your sign up.  Please contact Jim Eckert with any questions or comments.
